FARAH CITY (PAN attack in western Farah province, an official said on Thursday.
Abdur Rahman Zhwandai, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident took place on Wednesday afternoon in Tot Chakaw area between Bala Baluk and Gulistan districts.
The officers came under attack while inspecting security posts on the Herat-Kandahar highway in the province, he said.
The Farah police chief and Interior Ministry officials were part of the delegation, the source said, adding Kandahar highway police head Lt. Amanullah and Farah’s deputy intelligence chief Lt. Bashir Ahmad were among the dead.
Zhwandai included, four police pick-ups and an armoured vehicle were destroyed in the brazen attack. A doctor at Farah Civil Hospital said on condition of anonymity they had received the bodies of six Farah police officers.
The governor’s spokesman said that Taliban also suffered casualties. He was unaware about the exact figures.
But a Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the assault and said Farah’s deputy intelligence head was among many 15 police officers were killed and 22 others wounded in the incident.
He confirmed death of two Taliban insurgents and added 5 police pick-ups were also destroyed in the attack.
