PUL-I-KHUMRI (PAN): Five children were killed and three others wounded following an improvised explosive device blast in northern Baghlan province, an official said on Saturday.
The incident took place late on Friday when the children were playing with the device in the Darmak area of Dushi district, the town’s administrative chief said.
Shamsuddin Sarhadi told Pajhwok Afghan News the injured were evacuated to the Baghlan Civil Hospital. A doctor at the hospital, Gul Mohammad Wardak, said two of the children were in critical condition.
A resident of the area, Yar Mohammad, said the children aged between 8 and 14 years were grazing cattle when they found the device. “We have repeatedly complained to officials to defuse Taliban-era IEDs in the area, but no one has listened to our complaints.”
Mohammad claimed the area was littered with IEDs and hence an urgent need for a demining campaign to protect residents.
Eight months ago, one child was killed and another wounded in a similar incident in the Sang Surkh area of the district.
