HERAT CITY (PAN): A dozen people, mostly militants, have been killed and six others wounded in separate incidents of violence in different province, officials said on Sunday.

One policeman was killed and three others were wounded late on Saturday when the insurgents attacked their vehicle with a hand grenade in the capital of southern Zabul province.

Provincial police head Brig. Gen. Ghulam Sakhi Rogh Lewanay told Pajhwok Afghan News the attackers ran into a house in Haji Asghar village after the attack.

Police raided the house after women and children were asked to come out, he said, adding one fighter was killed and two others were injured in the ensuing clash that lasted two hours.

Elsewhere in the province, a militant commander, named Mullah Mohammad Alam, was eliminated in a police encounter in Shahr-i-Safa district.

Sardar Ahmad Hotak, the district chief, police seized two Kalashnikov assault rifles and a motorbike in the firefight.

On the other hand, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi said the fighters attacked a police pick-up, killing all those on board. He also confirmed the Shahr-i-Safa clash, but gave no casualty figures.

In western Herat province, three rebel commanders were among seven guerrillas killed during an overnight Afghan army operation in Guzra district.

Najibullah Najibi, a spokesman for the 20th Zafar Military Corps, identified the insurgent commanders as Akbar Nashin, Aziz Charkhi and Omar Sheikh. Their bodies were transferred to a local hospital.

Separately, one civilian was killed and three others were injured in bomb blast in the Muqar district of Badghis province. Mirwais Mirzakwal, the gubernatorial spokesman, said the injured were struggling for life.
