KABUL): A ceremony was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday to praise Kazakhstan for granting 1,000 scholarships to Afghan students and highlight the importance of such opportunities.

The ministry said so far 650 Afghan students had been sent to Kazakhstan, where they were currently studying in different fields, including medicine, law, economics as well as teacher and military training.

With the departure of a new group of 168 Afghan students, the fourth phase of the Kazakhstan student scholarship programme for Afghan students has been completed.

A statement from the ministry said the programme had been initiated under an agreement signed on November 22, 2009 by the presidents of Afghanistan and Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan has pledged to grant 1,000 scholarships at the bachelor and masters levels to Afghan students for a period of five years until 2015.
