HERAT CITY (PAN insurgents killed four Afghan Local Police (ALP) members during an attack on their post in the Shindand district of western Herat province, a public representative said on Thursday.

Provincial council member Noor Mohammad Zarifi told Pajhwok Afghan News the attack took place late on Wednesday night in Changan Poza, a village between Shindand city and Azizabad area.

Four ALP members were killed and their equipment seized by the attackers, said Zarifi, who alleged ALP members manning a nearby post had abandoned their post and fled to the district centre.

The public representative said the security situation in Shindand was deteriorating day by day, with insurgents gaining strength.

He said the attack came two days after ALP members deserted two posts in the same area.

However, the district police chief, Col. Ghulam Ghaus Milyar, expressed his unawareness about the attack, saying the claim was being assessed.

A security official confirmed the incident. Some ALP members were killed and their weapons stolen by the assailants, he said on condition of anonymity.

A Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi said the fighters overran one police post in Shindand and killed three policemen.
