UNICEF, ACB team up for child rights

KABUL Cricket Board (ACB) and UNICEF on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together for the promotion of children’s rights in the war-devastated country.

Under the MoU, UNICEF and the ACB would collaborate on campaigns and initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of polio vaccination and the right of every child to education, the board said in a statement.

“Cricketers are role models for the young people of Afghanistan and for their families. They are uniquely placed to raise awareness of important issues such as polio eradication, health care and education for the children,” ACB CEO Dr. Noor Mohammed Murad said the at the signing event. “ACB is excited about this partnership. I think we can really make a difference together.”

Peter Crowley, UNICEF representative in Afghanistan, said it was a collective responsibility to ensure children’s rights. “We all need to work together to ensure that our children are protected and that they have access to quality health and education services,” he said.

He said cricket and cricketers could play important role in promoting child rights and raising awareness about polio.

Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria are the only three countries where polio remains endemic. The MoU signed today is a non-financial agreement of cooperation that will be valid until December, 31, 2014.
