FARAH CITY (PAN): Jujube production has jumped three-fold in western Farah province this year, compared to last year’s yield, an official and orchard owners said on Tuesday.

The fruit is widely produced in Andar Dara, Pusht Koh, Qala Kah, Pushrod, Gulistan districts and the provincial capital, Farah city. Orchard owners say the increased yield would help them earn more profit.

A total 816 hectares of land was brought under cultivation last year, producing 367 tonnes. But this year’s total 950 hectares produced 1,187 tonnes, Acting Agriculture Director Eng. Abdul Manan Mateen told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said farmers were trained how to better establish new orchards last year, when plant diseases did not occur, resulting in an increased production. He said the fruit remained under more attention for the last two years in Farah.

Afghanistan and India, where the fruit is used in making medicines,” agriculture official Mohammad Jafar Kazimi said.

The price of a kilo of jujube this year hovers between 150 and 300 afghanis, compared to last year’s 100 afghanis (nearly $2).

An orchard owner in the Pusht Koh district, Mohammadullah, said his 1000 plants spread over one acre of land produced 5.5 tonnes of jujube, earning him 1.1 million afghanis.
