KABUL activists on Tuesday said the government could land into a deep trouble if it allowed human rights violators to contest next year’s presidential elections.

They echoed the call at a gathering held in Kabul. They asked the government to release a report of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC), detailing human rights violations that took place in Afghanistan during last three decades. The AHRC was to release the report in 2012, but did not do so for unknown reasons.

“The AIHRC has told the civil society that it is ready to publish the report, but President Karzai says the current situation in Afghanistan doesn’t suit releasing such reports,” Ajmal Balochzada, a civil society group member, told the gathering.

He insisted if elements, who ordered or carried out, human rights abuses were given a chance to form the next government, then the nation should be ready to embrace more violence, terrorism, administrative corruption, drug smuggling and rights abuses, particularly of women.

“They can force people into voting for them if emerge as candidates. It will threaten the nascent democracy and question the vote’s credibility,” he said.

AIHRC spokesman Dr. Rafiullah Baidar told Pajhwok Afghan News they had the report submitted to the government. “Now it is up the government whether or not to release the document,” he added.

The gathering asked the government to prosecute those responsible for gross human rights violations in order to ensure justice for the victims.

People whose actions had affected the lives and property of others in violent political confrontations in the past continued to enjoy power and government positions,  the activists said.
