KABUL): Afghan intelligence operatives have raided a building in the central capital Kabul to detain militants who wanted to attack an event on the death anniversary of former president Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani.

Assassinated by a Taliban bomber at his residence in the diplomatic district of Wazir Akbar Khan two years ago, Rabbani’s death anniversary is to be marked on Friday, Sept. 20.

The overnight operation was conducted in the 5th police district on the road between Qambar Square and the Company neighbourhood of the capital, a National Directorate of Security (NDS) official confided to Pajhwok Afghan News.

Meanwhile, the Kabul police spokesman confirmed the raid. One of the would-be assailants blew himself up while a second was detained by NDS agents, Hashmatullah Stanikzai said, adding his information was initial investigations.

An area resident, Salim, claimed hearing a blast and gunfire at about 9pm when the locality was ringed by security personnel. They remained indoors, with no one allowed to visit the site.
