KUNDUZ CITY (PAN), including a woman, were abducted by unidentified gunmen in the northern province of Faryab on Thursday, officials said.
A district field coordinator, a female registrar and another worker of the commission were kidnapped while travelling from Almar district to Maimana.
IEC provincial head, Mohammad Aman Aman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the workers were abducted 500 metres from the district headquarters, but police were unable to ensure their security.
On the other hand, provincial police chief, Lt. Gen. Nabi Jan Mullakhel, said the IEC had not informed police about the workers’ travel to Maimana.
It was not immediately clear who had abducted the IEC employees, but police were trying to secure their release, he added. Tribal elders have been asked for talks with the kidnappers.
A tribal elder said on condition of anonymity Taliban fighters had taken the hostages to the Torban village of Almar district.
