Plot to assassinate Sayyaf foiled: NDS

Plot to assassinate Sayyaf foiled: NDS

Sep 22, 2013 - 15:10

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): Afghanistaninfo-icon’s spy service on Sunday claimed foiling an assassination attempt on noted jihadinfo-icon leader Prof. Abdul Rab Rasul Sayyaf and detaining three of the would-be assailants.

The National Directorate of Security (NDSinfo-icon) said the detainees included the mastermind behind the plot, Najibullah, alias Zakirullah, a resident of the Jaghatu district of Maidan Wardak province.

A statement from the intelligence said the man had been freed two months back after serving a three-jail term on charges of involvement in terrorist activities.

Following his release, Najibullah was directed by Ahmadullah, a representative of the Talibaninfo-icon’s Quetta Shurainfo-icon for Wardak, to plan suicide attacks. He was tasked with assassinating Sayyaf.

Intelligence agents gained information about the planned attack and arrested Najibullah along with two of accomplices with arms and ammunitions, the NDS statement added.

A sinister conspiracy had been thwarted with the arrests, the agency said, adding it was investigating the incident.

On Friday, Sayyaf denounced the Taliban uprising against the government of Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani as un-Islamic and challenged all Muslim scholars to justify the revolt.

He again made clear suicide attacks had no justification in Islam and the perpetrators would face Allah wrath. “At the same venue, I had asked all Muslim scholars last year to prove the legality of these attacks.”
