KUNDUZ/MAIMANA (PAN) chief for Chahar Dara district was shot dead by insurgents in northeastern Kunduz province on Monday, an official said.

The incident took place around 7am when militants opened fire on the district spy chief, Ghulam Hussain, in the Pul-i-Zakhel area of Kunduz City, the provincial police chief, Abdul Khalil Andarabi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Elsewhere, a clash between two illegal armed groups took place in the Kohistan district of northwestern Faryab province on Monday morning, leaving one individual dead and another wounded.

Imamyar Taqwa, Kohistan district chief, linked the clash in Tagawak area to old enmity between two groups. He said the Taliban presence had lately increased in the area and police forces could not fight against them.

An Islamic scholar, who did not want to be named, said the man wounded in the clash — Abdul Samad — had paved the ground for Taliban’s operations in the area. Opponents of the Taliban were fighting against Samad’s supporters, he added.
