Set up by 33 years ago, the Jeddah-based International Islamic Fiqh Academy was proposed by King Khalid at the OIC meeting in January 1981 in Makkah. The 57-member body of renowned scholars and jurists of the Muslim world focuses on modern-day problems.
Members of the academy, at the end of the daylong international conference of religious scholars in Kabul, they hoped.
Karzai welcomed the suggestion, saying: “We have long been asking Muslim states, particularly Saudi Arabia, to cooperate with our peace initiatives. It will be our good fortune if the International Islamic Fiqh Academy organises Afghan peace parleys.”
According to a statement from the Presidential Palace, Karzai expressed his pleasure over the arrival of Muslim scholars in Kabul to participate in the conference that stressed an end to the war.
