PUL-I-ALAM (PAN): A Pakistani engineer has been kidnapped in central Logar province, bringing to a halt work on an under-construction hospital in Pul-i-Alam, an official said on Thursday.
The engineer was travelling to Kabul from Logar on Wednesday afternoon when he was kidnapped by unknown gunmen, Logar crime branch chief Col. Mohammad Jan Abid told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The abduction took place on the Kabul-Logar highway in Konjak area, he said, adding the engineer was in his personal car.
His car was found abandoned in Baboos area near Pul-i-Alam, the provincial capital, this morning, said Abid, who added tribal elders had launched efforts to secure the engineer’s release.
A doctor in Pul-i-Alam hospital, wishing anonymity, said construction work on the new building had been stopped in protest. He said Pakistani workers had warned they would not resume work until the engineer was recovered.
The 300-bed hospital is being constructed by Pakistan at a cost of $37 million in Pul-i-Alam. Eighty percent of work on the building has been completed.
