NEW YORK (PAN as the epicentre of terrorism against his country, asking the neighbour to eliminate insurgent safe havens if it really desires better bilateral ties.

State-sponsored cross border terrorism was of particular concern to India, Singh told the 68th United Nations General Assembly in New York on Saturday. “It is important the terrorist machinery that draws sustenance from Pakistan be shut down.”

Pakistan must stop being the epicentre of terrorism if it wanted improved relations with India, he stressed, saying: “For progress to be made, it is imperative that the territory of Pakistan and the areas under its control are not utilised for aiding or abetting terrorism.”

Singh made the remarks a day before his breakfast meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The meeting will be the first between the two leaders since Sharif’s election victory in May.

Although the Pakistani premier views the meeting a chance for a new beginning, his Indian counterpart has tamped down expectations from the talks.
