HERaT CITY (PAN): Three civilians and two Afghan Local Police (ALP) members were killed during an insurgent attack on a security checkpoint in western Herat province on Monday, an official said.
Four insurgents were also killed in a subsequent clash triggered by the predawn attack on the ALP post in the Sara Parda village of Obe district, the town’s police chief said.
Col. Sher Agha Alokozai told Pajhwok Afghan News several attackers were wounded in the firefight. However, he stopped short of putting a clear figure on those wounded.
Meanwhile, a security official said on condition of anonymity that three civilians were also killed during the firefight in Obe — one of the restive districts located 100 kilometres north of Herat City.
Without commenting on the incident, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi said the guerrillas had killed one policeman and wounded two others in an attack on a security patrol in the district.
