LASHKARGAH/GHAZNI CITY (PANinfo-icon): Security forces thwarted a possible terrorist attack by seizing an explosives-laden car and detaining the driver in Lashkargah, the capital of southern Helmand province, the governor's office said on Monday.

The militant planned to target government officials in Lashkargah, but his car was intercepted by police on the Kandahar-Helmand highway before. Five suicide vests, as many Kalashnikov assault rifles and 19 hand grenades were recovered from the car.

Elsewhere in the restive south, a rebel who wanted to attack the Provincial Reconstructioninfo-icon Team (PRTinfo-icon) in Ghazni province was shot dead late on Sunday.

Shafiq Nang, the governor’s spokesman, said the man planned to enter the PRT and attack foreign forces, but security guards identified and gunned him down before he reached his target.
