KABUL in the Warduj district of northeastern Badakhshan province.

The Taliban ambushed a vehicular convoy of police in the troubled town about two weeks back, killing 25 policemen, injuring 11 others and detaining six more. The rebels also seized six police vehicles and a truck.

A Wolesi Jirga delegation that visited the province on Wednesday presented its report at the assembly. Lawmaker Bashir Ahmad Tenj said they found security forces lacked coordination in Badakhshan.

He said the intelligence service had provided prior information about the ambush, but the officials concerned had failed to take preventive steps.

He asked the government to rethink about the provincial administration and prosecute security officials whose carelessness led to the huge death toll.

The delegation suggested police should be strengthened, illegal extraction of mines prevented in Badakhshan, where reconstruction projects be launched on a priority basis.

Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi said the inquiry report would be shared with the officials concerned to take action against those responsible.

Ministry of Interior (MoI) spokesman Siddique Siddiqui told Pajhwok Afghan News the parliamentary delegation should share its report with the ministry in order to enable it to initiate action after conducting its own investigation into the incident.
