National Congress to name presidential runner

KABUL organisations, was announced on Thursday. Its leaders said they would soon decide on a candidate for the presidential elections.

Mohammad Isa Ishaqzai, the head of the conglomerate called National Congress, said the alliance included 70 political groups, 45 civil society organisations, MPs and university teachers.

Ishaq told a press conference in Kabul the coalition would soon field its candidate for the presidential vote. He also hinted at supporting a runner whose patriotism and commitment to safeguarding the national interest was beyond doubt. 

“We will soon reach a decision on nominating our presidential choice at the maiden meeting of the National Congress High Council,” he added.

Abdul Rab Rassoul Sayyaf, Mohammad Mohaqiq, Gul Agha Sherzai, Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and Abdul Rahim Wardak have also resigned their positions, indicating their plans to run in the elections.

Since the nomination process started on Sept. 16, 73 individuals including three women have so far received information kits on presidential elections.

Ishaqzai said that protecting the national interest, ending the current violence, fighting corruption, respecting Islamic teachings, promoting unity and defending the country were among their key priorities.

“Poverty and joblessness are the main causes of the current violence; we don’t want to blame foreigners for the existing situation. The conflict concerns our own politicians,” he remarked.

“Vibrant civil society groups also need to keep an eye on government activities and should not allow the authorities to act against human rights or national interests,” Ishaqzai concluded.
