KABUL): Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Zalmai Rassoul and Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum, chief of staff to the commander-in-chief of Afghan forces, have resigned their positions to take part in the 2014 presidential elections, an official said on Saturday.

Rassoul visited the Independent Elections Commission (IEC) main office in Kabul today to file his nomination papers, the official confided to Pajhwok Afghan News. He had no clear idea as to who would be Rassoul’s vice-presidents.

However, sources say Rassoul is considering Junbish-i-Milli Afghanistan head Gen. Dostum and Sarwar Danish for the VP slots.

In recent days, Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, Abdul Rab Rassoul Sayyaf, Haji Mohammad Mohaqiq Gen. Abdul Rahim Wardak, Gul Agha Sherzai and Mohammad Ismail have also resigned their jobs.
