223 PC candidates registered in east

JALALABAD/ASADABAD (PAN, have nominated themselves for 44 provincial council seats in four eastern provinces.

For the 17-seat Nangarhar council, 128 people including 11 females were in the run, said the provincial head of the Independent Election Commission (IEC).

Dr. Akhtar Ajmal, told Pajhwok Afghan News a number of new faces and incumbent public representatives were among the contenders.

Up for grabs in neighbouring Laghman are nine seats. Fifty-nine people, including five women, have officially registered for the electoral race, said the IEC acting provincial head Dr. Abdullah Fazli.

Of the nine seats on the Nuristan council, three are reserved for women. Sixteen individuals, including only one woman, are in the race, according to the governor’s spokesman, Zahir Bahand.

For the nine seats on the Kunar council, there are 39 candidates, Training and Public Outreach Officer Sadat Mirza said. So far 65,000 voter cards have been issued, including 25,000 to women.
