Rahmat stars as Afghans humiliate Kenya

KABUL’s emphatic victory against Kenya in a four-day International Cricket Council (ICC) Intercontinental Cup match in Dubai on Tuesday.

In a 284-ball knock studded with 14 boundaries and five sixes, Shah scored 144 on the second day of the encounter at the ICC Academy, a contribution that enabled the national team to recover from its 69 for six to put up 236.

He was also instrumental in handing Afghanistan a vital 72-run lead in the first innings. Kenya were restricted to 162 runs in their first innings and 140 in the second, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) spokesman said.

Farid Hotak told Pajhwok Afghan News over the telephone from Dubai that Mohammad Nasim Barees, who came in at No 8, chipped in with a useful 32. With Shah, he forged a partnership of 122 runs for the seventh wicket.  

As their nightmare with the bat continued, the Kenyans reduced the deficit but lost seven wickets, Hotak said, adding the opposition’s top order struggled. CO Obuya (16) was the highest scorer. 

For Afghanistan, Sayed Sherzad and Yamin Ahmadzai took three wickets each, while Izzatullah Dawlatzai and Barees dismissed the remaining four batsmen, the ACB spokesman added. 

Set a target of 169 runs, Afghanistan raced to victory in the 15^th over for the loss of two wickets on the third day. In their second innings, Javed Ahmadi made 28 runs and Rahmatullah Sahak 23. The result represents Afghanistan’s fourth consecutive triumph against Kenya.

This year’s edition of Intercontinental Cup features Afghanistan, Canada, Ireland, Kenya, Namibia, the Netherlands, Scotland and the United Arab Emirates.
