CHARIKAR): Insurgents fired a dozen rockets at the Bagram Airbase, the largest military base for US troops in central Parwan province, late on Sunday night, but no reports about casualties could be ascertained.

The rockets were fired from the mountains in Mehtabkhel and Barakab area, the district chief, Abdul Shakoor Qadosi, told Pajhwok Afghan News. Security officials had launched a search operation, but no arrest could be made so far, he said.

A nearby resident, Malak Mirza, said they heard more than 12 sounds of rockets hitting the base. He had also no information about any casualties.

Foreign troops have not yet commented on the rocket attack, but the Taliban have immediately claimed responsibility for it.

Their spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said 20 rockets hit the base, inflicting heavy casualties on American troops. He claimed some portions of the facility caught fire.

Soon after the attack, Mujahid said, foreign troops carried out an airstrike in a nearby area, but the fighters stayed unharmed.
