SHARAN (PAN): Traffic accidents left at least 175 people injured in various parts of southeastern Paktika province during Eid holidays, a medic said on Sunday.

Muhammad Riza, a doctor at a privately-run hospital in Sharan, the provincial capital, told Pajhwok Afghan News most accidents involved motorcycles and cars.

He said 175 people sustained injuries in traffic accidents over the past six days and 15 of them were rushed to Kabul due to severe injuries.

According to Riza, a majority of those injured have been discharged and some remained hospitalised.

The doctor, who blamed 80 percent of accidents on motorcycles, cited fast driving and carelessness on the part of drivers other reasons contributing to increasing number of accidents on roads.

Although traffic officials haven’t yet commented on the so many accidents, residents accused drivers of causing most accidents due to speedy driving and carelessness.

A resident of Sharan Kala Khan Hiran, also a tribal elder, told Pajhwok Afghan News he saw 10 traffic accidents taking place on the second day (Wednesday) of Eidul Adha in Sharan, resulting in injuries to 15 persons. “Drivers don’t obey traffic laws and drive carelessly,” he said.

Ten people lost their lives to traffic accidents during Eid holidays last year in Paktika.
