313 complaints filed against candidates’ list

Oct 24, 2013 - 19:32

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): The Independent Electoral Complaint Commission (IECC) on Thursday said it had received 313 complaints challenging the initial list of presidential and provincial council candidates.

IECC spokesman and secretary Nadir Mohseni told Pajhwok Afghan News the complaints had been lodged with the IECC’s central and regional offices.

Earlier this week, the Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) released the initial list of candidates for April 2014 presidential and provincial council elections, declaring 10 presidential and 2,703 provincial council hopefuls as eligible.

The IEC cited dual-nationality and failure to provide 100,000 signatures of supporters in provinces as key reasons for the disqualifications.

Mohseni said of the total complaints received, 213 had been filed by Kabul residents and disqualified nominees.

Prior to the announcement of the preliminary list, the IECC said it had received 20 complaints against presidential and provincial council wannabes.
