UN ready to support next year’s elections: Kubiš

KABUL): The United Nations has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting next year’s presidential and provincial council elections at the request of Afghan authorities and institutions as mandated by the UN Security Council.

Preparations for the 2014 elections, including issues emerging at the end of the candidate nomination period, came up for discussion at Thursday’s meeting, a statement from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said.

“Afghan-led and Afghan-managed elections are at the very heart of the political transition. The Constitution must be upheld and the electoral laws respected,” the statement added.
