KABUL, the lower house of the parliament, on Saturday decided to hold two general sessions and three commission-level meetings every week.

Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi said the decision had been taken by chiefs of house commissions. The move was aimed enabling the commissions to focus on their work in an efficient manner, he added.

Ibrahimi explained: “If the house panels don’t do their work professionally, we will face problems in firming up agendas for general sessions.”

But a public representative from central Maidan Wardak province, Ghulam Hussain Nasiri, criticised the decision as inaccurate. “Members stay away from general sessions and never attend panel meetings.”

He urged the house administrative board to mount pressure on legislators to take part regularly in all meetings. At times, absenteeism among MPs leads to lack of quorum that hinders the legislative process.
