KABUK (PAN) to provide its observers the required facilities during the upcoming presidential and provincial council polls.

Hayatullah Hayat, in charge of CSCC, told reporters in Kabul they expected the IEC to let them observe the electoral process for the sake of transparency in the democratic exercise. He said they had not been taken into confidence on the scrutiny of candidates’ documents.

He acknowledged the election process was progressing in a democratic manner but the civil society groups were worried about access to sensitive information. Candidates and civil society should be informed of the latest developments in the process, he said.

The CSCC chief believed presidential and provincial council elections would have a direct impact on the future of the country. In order to ensure future stability, free and fair elections were a dire need, he said, warning that rigging could lead to horrible consequences.

In a declaration, the centre asked the authorities to exercise their power to ensure credible and inclusive elections. The government should not allow the use of its machinery in favour of any candidate and the IEC must prevent irregularities, it added.

The CSCC called for the election commission to explain to poll contenders and civil society organisations reasons for disqualification. It advised rejected candidates to seek explanations for their exclusion from the preliminary list in a legal way.

With the final list of candidates expected to be released on in mid-November, 10 of the 27 presidential hopefuls and 2,704 of the 3,056 provincial council aspirants are on the preliminary list issued by the IEC.

“We support the disqualified candidates’ views and ask the authorities concerned to share with the media the documents on the basis of which they have been disqualified,” said Zubair Shafiqi, the CSCC spokesman.
