LASHKARGAH (PAN): Acting on an intelligence report, police have unearthed another factory producing low-quality petroleum in Lashkargah, the capital of southern Helmand province, officials said on Wednesday.

Police raided the factory late on Tuesday in the Ahmad Shahi Mena area and detained six workers, said Col. Juma Gul Himmat, the deputy police chief.

He added the factory owner named Haji Painda Khan escaped and efforts were being made to arrest him.

Himmat said police seized 6,000 litres of oil, which was a mix of acid, grease and moboil from the factory.

Factory workers would use the mix in original oil and thus producing low-quality fuel, which damaged engines of vehicles, the police official said.

Himmat said the detainees would be dealt in accordance with the law and that efforts were in place to detect more such factories in the area.

The incident comes three days after another factory involved in the sordid business was sealed in the same area.

Helmand Enterprises official Haji Shah Wali said joint efforts of police and detectives were crucial to unearthing such factories in order to end problems between low quality fuel sellers and drivers.

Samiullah, a resident of Lashkargah, said the sale of inferior quality petrol had increased in the city, suggesting tough action against adulterers.
