KABUL until 2017, President Hamid Karzai’s office said on Thursday.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said Secretary Justine Greening held out the pledge during a meeting with Karzai in London. The president is currently on a five-day state visit to Britain.

Issues of mutual interest such as bilateral relations and UK’s assistance to Afghanistan, especially for development projects, came up for discussion at the meeting on Wednesday.

The importance of joint economic projects between Kabul and Islamabad was also a topic at the meeting, according to the statement that quoted Greening as saying: “We are interested in assisting Afghanistan mostly in the fields that are prioritised by the Afghan government.”

The visiting leader suggested the British assistance should be focused on infrastructure projects. He stressed peace and stability in the region could help pave the ground for rapid execution of development projects.

The president also met Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace and discussed mutual relations and the situation in the region.
