KABUL): Armed insurgents stormed the Kamdesh district of eastern Nuristan province on Friday morning, injuring four children, an official said.

Zahir Bahand, the Nuristan governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News over the telephone the Taliban attacked the remote district at 6am and fighting was still ongoing.

According to preliminary reports, he said, four children had been wounded in the assault. He had no further details of the incident, blaming the central government to send reinforcements to the area.

The policemen deployed to the district were fighting alone against the militants to prevent the district’s fall, he added. The armed opposition has not yet commented on the fighting.

Brig. Gen. Abdul Baqi Nuristani said four of the assailants, including Pakistanis and Chechens, were killed in retaliation security forces.

Without giving the dead fighters’ identities, he alleged the attackers had sneaked into the district from Pakistan’s northwestern valley of Chitral.

Several districts of Nuristan, bordering Pakistan, have witnessed occasional Taliban attacks in recent years. The rebels have been able to briefly capture parts of the province before they are ousted by security forces.
