KABUL Cup a historic achievement.

Afghanistan, beating Kenya in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last month, will play for the first time in the 2015 World Cup to be played in Australia and New Zealand.

The meeting was attended by Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, some lawmakers and Afghanistan Cricket Board officials and national team members. Ibrahimi said making it to the 2015 event was a big success for the cricket team and a great honour for the nation.

“Although cricket doesn’t have a long history in Afghanistan, Afghans have been able to find their way to world events as a result of their hard work and tough practice,” Ibrahimi remarked

ACB chief Shahzada Massoud said for the first time the Afghan team, having twice qualified for the Twenty20 World Cup, would contest the 2015 mega event.

“Victory against Kenya to confirm the side’s berth in the WC was indeed a historic achievement,” said Massoud, who added despite access to limited facilities, Afghanistan had been placed 13th among 170 countries.

He said the ACB was trying its level best to provide the team with more facilities to enable it to do even better in the mega event.

At the meeting, some lawmakers promised extending financial support to the squad. Players and ACB officials, who attended the meeting, were offered medals, awards and cash prizes.
