JALALABAD (PAN has decreased as a result of growing public awareness among the people in eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Monday said.

Women’s Affairs Director Anisa Omrani said they had conducted public awareness programmes on women’s rights in the province this year. She told Pajhwok Afghan News some of the campaigns were still ongoing.

Only five cases of violence against women had been registered by her department so far this year, she said, adding: “Most of the incidents involve girls running away from homes.”

Hailing from other provinces in the eastern zone, the women were detained by border police before crossing into Pakistan, she said. The detainees are currently living in women’s shelters in Nangarhar.

Many women shared their domestic problems with the department, which addressed their plight in a peaceful manner, Anisa said. “We have found solutions to their problems with their spouses and now they are living happily.”

She said although public awareness programmes increased people’s knowledge about women’s rights, lack of employment opportunities for females and a proper education in remote villages remained major concerns.

Anisa stressed: “We must pay due attention to Hesarak and Dur Baba districts, where there is no school for girls.” She asked tribal elders and religious scholars to ensure education facilities for girls in far-flung villages.

The director went on to urge armed rebels not to hinder girls’ education and donor agencies assisting them with public awareness programmes.
