Kabul residents complain of rising gas price

KABUL): Kabul residents complain of rising liquefied gas rates in the city, but Ministry of Commerce and Industries says it has huge stocks and will not allow any price hike.

Residents the current rainfall saw the price of one kilogram of gas shooting up from 45afs to 60-65afs. They blamed the government for the sudden rise, demanding price stability and regulation.

Dur Mohammad, a dweller of Deh Afghanan area, remarked: “I am surprised at an increase of 15afs in gas prices within a fortnight.” But gas dealer Zabihullah said he himself purchased one kilogram for 60afs

Wahidullah Ghazikhel, the spokesman for the Commerce Ministry, also acknowledged the gas price hike and said the ministry has adequate stocks at the Hairatan Port and would transfer them soon to Kabul.

He linked the price increase to increasing gas demand, saying the ministry was duty-bound to boost supplies. Teams had been constituted to check prices in different parts of the city on a regular basis, he added.

On the other hand, the Petroleum Department said the price of one kg of gas should be 59afs. Faridullah Sherzai, head of department, viewed the afghani depreciation, rising prices in the international market and taxes were principal reasons for the soaring gas rates.
