KABUL): Hundreds of Kabul residents on Thursday protested against the municipality’s failure to meet their demands, blocking the road between Kart-i-Naw and Bagrami areas for three hours.

The protestors placed huge rocks on the road in Qala-i-Noman area at about 8am, but the demonstration ended when the municipality launched work on gravelling the road.

Chanting “Allah-o-Akbar”, the protestors accused the mayor of incompetency and urged President Hamid Karzai to replace him with a patriotic, pro-people and individual.

The municipality had failed to translate into action its pledge to convey their demands to the president, protest organiser Mali Khan Sherzai told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the municipality had promised to construct a three kilometres road, water channels and small bridges in area after residents closed the route 20 days back.

A protestor and resident of Ahmad Shah Baba area, Amanullah Kakar, said a large number of youths and crippled peopled, particularly children, participated in the demonstration.

He added: “The Kabul mayor has failed to keep his promises. His negligence has forced us to protest in this cold winter. We have no other option.”

But Abdul Qadir Arzo, the municipality spokesman, said they had met demands of residents. Gravelling of the road began today and the project would be completed soon.
