HERAT City (PAN): The land-grab culture among warlords and other influential people in some parts of the country has caused complicated problems for authorities, an official said on Monday.
Herat Governor Fazlullah Wahidi told a gathering of mayors from nine provinces in Herat City such meetings had been useful in identifying challenges, resolving problems and sharing experiences.
Last year, he recalled, the Herat Municipality had hosted two similar gatherings involving mayors from central and southern provinces. The meeting had yielded good results, he said without elaborating.
The governor linked the Herat Municipality’s success to cooperation from residents, suggesting the experiences should be shared to enable other mayors to attract people’s support.
Herat Mayor Muhammad Salim Tarakai said mayors from Bamyan, Daikundi, Badakhshan, Takhar, Kunduz, Panjsher, Parwan and Kapisa provinces, as well as representative of several other sectors, were attending the gathering.
Tarakai told Pajhwok Afghan News they would be discussing the challenges facing municipalities during the two-day session,
Taloqan Mayor Faiz Muhammad Tawhidi called his travel useful, saying he would replicate the Herat development model in his city. He added 52 streets were being asphalt in Taloqan.
