JALALABAD (PAN): Intelligence operatives rescued a child kidnapped by a gang for ransom and detained two suspects during a raid on a house in eastern Nangarhar province, a senior official said on Wednesday.
Acting governor Mohammad Hanif Gardiwal told Pajhwok Afghan News the child had been kidnapped 40 days ago from Ghochko area of Surkh Rod district.
The child was rescued during a predawn raid on a house in the area and was reunited with his family later on, the official said.
He said the two suspects detained in connection with the kidnapping had confessed to their crime.
“I am very concerned about the increasing incidents of kidnappings for ransom in Nangarhar, but we are taking the issue very seriously,” the acting governor said.
He also said two persons kidnapped from Jalalabad, the provincial capital, some time back had been found dead.
More than a dozen suspects had been arrested in connection with the kidnap-murder case, said Gardiwal, who sought severe punishment for the detainees.
The rescued child’s father, Farhad, who thanked the intelligence and police officials, said the kidnappers had been in contact with him, demanding $300,000 in ransom. He said he didn’t have such a huge amount of money to pay the kidnappers.
Farhad then paid one million Pakistani rupees to the kidnappers in Bari area, but they did not release his son.
He asked the government to push for severe punishment to the kidnappers in order to discourage the growing business of kidnappings for ransom.
