GHAZNI CITY (PAN): Two policemen were injured when militants rammed their explosive-laden car into a police check-post in the Qarabagh district of southern Ghazni province on Thursday, an official said.
Fazal Rahman Nazarwal, the Qarabagh district chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News the insurgents ploughed their pick-up into a police checkpoint in Alokhel area in the wee hours of the day.
The security check-post was damaged considerably because of the intensity of the explosion, he said, adding both policemen were in critical condition.
Resident Sharifullah, giving an eyewitness account, said the powerful blast was heard in remote parts of the locality. “Dirt flew and columns of smoke billowed from the check-post long after the attack. The blast smashed windowpanes of nearby houses.”
The attack took place a day after Maj. Gen. Ghulam Mohiuddin Sarwari, the provincial police chief, said that security had been bolstered in Ghazni City and districts keeping for Ashura.
Separately, police in Ghazni City defused a mine planted near the Jahan Mulki Girls High School. No one has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
