Karbala sacrifice called abiding inspiration

KABUL Hussain (RA) rendered in Karbala to uphold the truth and resist tyranny.

Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was martyred along with 72 companions on the 10th of Moharamul Haram 1,435 years ago by the forces of Yazid in Iraq.

At gatherings marking the anniversary of the Karbala tragedy, religious scholars from Shiite and Sunni sects highlighted the courage of Hazrat Hussain and his loyal followers. Speaking at mosques and imambargahs in Kabul, they said the sacrifice would always be remembered in history.

Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, a president runner and leader of the opposition party the National Coalition of Afghanistan, told a ceremony here: “The Karbala uprising on Yaum-i-Ashur continues to inspire millions of people.”

Worldwide movements against cruelty, corruption, ignorance and oppression had been inspired by the Karbala battle, Abdullah said, adding Muslim would gain strength and unity if they imbibed the Ashura message of resistance to injustice.

Economy Minister Abdul Hadi Arghandiwal, who also participated in the ceremony, paid tribute to the courage of Imam Hussain. He said the prophet’s grandson sacrificed his life to win freedom for others from those who had deviated from Islamic teachings.

Former Bamyan governor Dr. Habiba Sarabi called the Ashura uprising a unique event in history. She said more than 1,400 years on, the sacrifice was remembered.

“If we want to live as a free nation, we have to follow in the footsteps of Hussain (RA) by struggling against ignorance, injustice and corruption,” she observed.

Referring to next year’s presidential and provincial council elections, the ex-governor stressed: “If we want a government of the people, we should take active part in the polls.”She called the elections a good opportunity of change that must be utilised.

Hezb-i-Wahdat leader Haji Mohammad described Islam was the best way of progress and development. “Our duty is to understand the essence of Islam and implement it,” he said, urging the countrymen to preserve achievements of the past 12 years.
