KABUL): President Hamid Karzai on Thursday called for further cementing bilateral relations, including enhanced economic cooperation, with Iran.
He issued the call during a meeting with Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ebrahim Rahimpour in Kabul, a statement from the Presidential Palace said.
Speaking on the occasion, the president said improved links in diverse fields were in the interest of both neighbours. He also urged resolution of the problems being faced Afghan refugees in Iran.
Afghan government officials and civil society activists often condemn Iran for imposing restrictions on refugees and treating them unfairly in prison.
A day earlier, acting Foreign Ministry Zarar Ahmad Osmani thanked Iran for contributing to the restoration of peace and stability in Afghanistan. At a meeting with Rahimpour, he stressed expansion of bilateral relations.
Rahimpour in turn briefed him on Iran’s principled policy on Afghanistan. Restoration of durable peace and stability in Afghanistan was one of Iran’s priorities, the visiting dignitary said.
