SHIBERGHAN (PAN official in northern Jawzjan province, police said on Saturday.

Identified as Maulvi Sohbat, the Taliban commander was arrested from the residence of Public Health Director Dr. Faridon Habib in Shebirghan, the provincial capital, on Saturday, a police officer said.

Col. Abdul Manan Raufi told Pajhwok Afghan News the detainee had been involved in a number of bomb attacks, assassinations of police officers and other terror activities.

Over the past two weeks, Sohbat had been living at the house of Dr. Faridon Habib, the police official said, adding the heath director was yet to be arrested.

Dr. Habib said Maulvi Sohbat was his brother-in-law and he was eager to join the government peace process. He said Sohbat had been in contact with the provincial peace committee and the police chief about his readiness to join the reconciliation programme.

However, the peace committee denied any contact with the detainee.
