KABUL (HPC) chairman Salahuddin Rabbani during a visit to Kabul this week, the UK Embassy in Kabul said on Wednesday.

The conflict resolution experts held discussions with Rabbani and ran a series of workshops for civil society’s groups discussing the important role civil society played in Northern Ireland and the need for inclusivity in peace building efforts, the embassy said in a statement.

British Ambassador Sir Richard Stagg said he was delighted to welcome the institute delegation to Kabul. “A number of the lessons we’ve learned from our experience in Northern Ireland are relevant to Afghanistan, the most important of which being that even the most difficult conflicts can get better when there’s goodwill on both sides.”

He said some of the Causeway Institute’s members were former adversaries now working side by side to help bring peace to other parts of the world.

“This should offer encouragement that, whilst there are many, the challenges facing the HPC are far from insurmountable”.

On the second visit, the Causeway Institute delegation led by experienced politician Jeffrey Donaldson MP, seek to support the High Peace Council’s efforts on the Afghan-led peace process.
