JALALABAD (PAN): The governor of eastern Nangarhar province, claiming that he had stopped extortionist practices at the Torkham dry port, on Sunday promised abolition of illegal check-posts on the highway.

Maulvi Attaullah Ludin expressed these views while talking to journalists at his residence on the completion of one month since he assumed charge of office.

After taking oath as new governor, he claimed making progress in promoting peace, fighting administrative corruption and launching an offensive against criminals.

“Steps have been taken to tax various items at the Torkham border, a move that will help prevent corruption on the one hand and boost our custom revenue on the other,” he added.

He directed the authorities concerned to launch a drive against tinted-glass vehicles and armed groups in the provincial capital. He held detailed meetings with local elders to know their views on how peace and stability could be achieved.

Prayer leaders have been asked to spread the message of peace, brotherhood and reconciliation at mosques, the governor said. “We will not allow anyone to use our soil against any country.”

He acknowledged the existence of illegal police check-posts on the Torkham-Jalalabad highway and promised effective steps to abolish them.
