Mullah Baradar given no assignment: Taliban

Dec 22, 2013 - 20:54

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): The Talibaninfo-icon on Sunday rejected reports as untrue that their leadership had tasked Mullahinfo-icon Abdul Ghani Baradar, the group’s former second-in command, with taking forward the peace drive with the Afghan government.

Recently, some media reports said the Taliban had appointed Baradar to negotiate peace with the Kabul administration. The movement in a statement rejected the reports as far from reality.

The statement said Mullah Baradar had not been released as yet by the Pakistani government and that he had not been given any responsibility to hold peace talks with anyone.

The statement called the reports as fake and unauthentic. The Taliban said establishing contacts with opponents was the job of their political commission.

The rebels asked Islamabad to release Baradar in view of his deteriorating healthinfo-icon condition.

High Peace Councilinfo-icon members, led by HPC chairman, Syed Salahuddin Rabbani, have recently been in Pakistaninfo-icon to meet Baradar after Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during a visit to Kabul last month, assured President Hamid Karzai arranging a meeting between HPC memebers and Baradar.
