KABUL): Nearly 9,000 homecoming families would be extended “all basic facilities of life” as part of the New Kabul City project, an ambitious public-private joint venture to construct a metropolis 1.5 times larger than the current city of Kabul.

The New Kabul City Township is said to be completed by 2025 in the Dehsabz and Barikab districts.

Thousands of families, who have recently returned from Iran and Pakistan, are allotted houses in a township called the Migrants Township adjacent to the New Kabul City Project in Dehsabz district.

These families would be provided with facilities like electricity, schools and health centres under an agreement signed between the Ministry of Refugees and the New Kabul Project authorities in Kabul on Sunday.

Ghulam Sakhi Hassanzada, the project chief executive, told reporters the agreement was aimed at providing the returning families with better living facilities.

“The New Kabul City is not for the rich only; it is also for those who have returned home from refuge abroad. They will avail all facilities and will be able to send their children to schools of a high standard.”

Deputy Refugee and Repatriation Minister Fazl Ahmad Azeemi said 9,000 returning families had been distributed plots measuring 2,500 jirbs (1,250 acres) at the Migrants Township.

Still more than three million Afghan refugees reportedly live in Iran and Pakistan.

The New Kabul City Project, designed on a 370,000-jirb land, would have houses for more than three million people.
