GHAZNI CITY (PAN): The civil airport in southern Ghazni province was inaugurated on Saturday when a private company’s aircraft landed at the runway for the first time ever.

Governor Musa Khan Akbarzada and central and provincial government officials attended a ceremony in Ghazni City for the airport’s inauguration. The governor voiced pleasure with the launch of flights.

Akbarzada told Pajhwok Afghan News the airport was one of the important 2013 projects aimed to prepare Ghazni to serve as capital of the Islamic civilisation. The airport would be used by residents of Ghazni and other provinces, he said.

Deputy Minister of Transport Qasim Wafayee Zada promised the airport runway would be properly paved and asphalted soon to address concerns about landing safety.

He urged the government to improve the airport to international standards, connecting Ghazni with the outside world. His ministry will improve the terminal in the near future.

Jahid Azimi, the chief of Ufaq Sharq Airlines that has been contracted by the government, said two flights would be operated weekly between Ghazni and Kabul on Saturdays and Thursdays.

Local authorities had assured the company of satisfactory security around the airport, he said, adding they would soon open an office in the provincial capital to facilitate ticket sales.

Work on the $7 million project had been launched four months ago.
