JALALABAD (Pajhwok): At least nine militants have been killed in a drone attack by NATOinfo-icon-led troops in eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Monday.

Provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Fazal Ahmad Sherzad, told Pajhwok Afghan News the International Security Assistance Force (ISAFinfo-icon) aircraft struck a vehicle carrying insurgents in Batikot district.

The incident happened in an area between Anbar Khani and Garabawi areas late on Sunday, he said, adding the pick-up the fighters were travelling contained explosives.

Resident Ainullah Rasuli said six militants in the pick-up were killed in one drone attack and three others on foot in a second strike.

One security official, who did not want to be named, said a local insurgent commander named Shaheen was among the dead. He added the explosives in the vehicle were destroyed as a result of the raid.

The riverside area between Batikot and Momand Dara districts has long been plagued by the insurgency. Fighters roam about the area freely in broad daylight.
