HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Around 300 Public Order Police personnel in western Herat province on Sunday staged a protest against what they called premature termination of their contracts.
They were dismissed before completion of their one year contracts, the protestors claimed, saying their salaries for several months had been pending.
Abdul Rashid one of the protestors, said they risked their lives protecting supply convoys on highways, but the authorities concerned had deprived them of their rights.
He asked the government to reinstate them and pay their five-month salaries. The protest in front of the police headquarters lasted about one hour.
Gen. Abul Hameed Hameed, the deputy police chief, said the sacked personnel had not undergone professional training. Only after attending such training programmes, they would be reinstated, he promised.
The delay in payment of salaries was a technical issue that would be resolved soon, the police chief said.
