KABUL on Sunday accused Samangan Governor Khairullah Anosh of brazen corruption, claiming his guards recently shot dead two protestors and wounded 13 others.

Ziauddin Zia, the provincial council head, claimed the governor’s bodyguards and police had inflicted casualties on protesters in Aibak. The protest was peaceful but police opened fire, he said, adding the governor was involved in administrative corruption.

A member of the Senate team that returned from Samangan to Kabul a day earlier said the protest had been peaceful and its participants neither turned violent nor damaged public property, while exercising their constitutional right.

Mohammad Faizi, briefing the upper house on the delegation’s findings, said the governor’s guards had fired at the demonstrators on Tuesday, killing two people and injuring 13 others.

He said the protestors had shown lawmakers documentary evidence of the governor’s involvement in administrative and moral corruption. They demanded Anosh’s sacking and prosecution, he added.

But the governor slammed the delegation’s report as unjust and far from accurate. “They had come here to express condolences to the bereaved families; they didn’t show me a formal document.”

Speaking to Pajhwok Afghan News, Anosh said he was ready to answer any allegation regarding his involvement in graft.

Deputy Chairman of Senate Mohammad Alam Ezedyar, who was part of the team, said: “On reaching Samangan, we saw a grave situation. There were protests all around.”

Chairman Fazal Hadi Muslimyar proposed that Senate, Presidential Palace and Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) investigators should take a joint and fair decision in light of their findings.
