KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Womeninfo-icon could play an effective role in the April presidential and provincial council elections, said an official of the Afghan Muslim Sisters’ Association on Thursday.

During the inaugural ceremony for the organisation in the capital, Suraya Hashmi, the association head, underlined a proactive part for women in the ballot.

She urged the authorities to provide women with a level playing field and an environmentinfo-icon free of fear and terror. The association would protect women’s right to vote, she promised.

Qari Matiullah Safi, a religious scholar, said it was a matter of satisfaction that the association had arranged such a gathering and demanded greater participation for themselves in elections.

Women had played a highly significant role in the past but their contribution to the nation-building enterprise had been ignored, he said, adding the government should use all resources to build religious institutions throughout the country.

As many as 70 individuals have membership of the Afghan Muslim Sister Association, an organisation led by Mufti Shamsur Rahman.
